When we decided to move out of state, we agonized over leaving my mother-in-law behind. Our young children were used to spending lots of time with Grandma and the bonds the three of them shared made them like a family within a family. At my mother-in-law age, we would soon be taking care of our elderly parents; they needed to be close. The decision was made for my husband and kids and me to move first and then send for Grandma when we found a suitable place that would house all of us.
My mother-in-law wqs still very independent. Betty loved to cook and would have to have her own kitchen. She really deserved to have her own living room and bath. The laundry room could be shared. We looked for several months and could not find a place with enough space to keep our elderly parent at home. We could find big houses, but renovations would take too long and be cost prohibitive. We looked through books and magazines for home addition ideas, but came up cold.
I just now stumbled across this company called Next Door Garage Apartments. For $35, 000 they will install a very tasteful apartment in your two car garage. This little house is so nice inside that I had no idea it was a garage. Best of all, it only takes them 10 days to complete and comes complete with handicap accessible bathroom. When the apartment is no longer needed, they will come take it all away and you have your garage back. What a perfect housing option for the elderly! I sure wish this had been around when we were wasting lots of time looking for the perfect place to suit our family‘s needs.
